Introduction
Stena Teknik participates in several fire safety research projects, to support vessel operations in the Stena Sphere with state of the art methods and technology. We engage and promote open dialogue with our competitors, as well as national and international regulatory functions, and generously share our expertise and ongoing workflows.
Stena Teknik is currently working together with DFDS and Wallenius on the EU Horizon 2020-funded LASH FIRE project – focused on fire safety of RoRo and RoPax vessels.
The project examines all phases of a fire event, from risk of ignition through a developed fire affecting the overall safety of the vessel. It is the combined effect of crew and systems that sets the safety level and outcome of a chain of events, and we work closely with operational crew on methods and with system suppliers and research institutes to investigate technology and reliability.
Upon completion of the project, LASH FIRE will propose a series of detailed risk control measures for IMO and other regulatory bodies to consider.
Among the topics relevant to the operation of RoRo and RoPax vessels are the transport of vehicles using new power sources, such as batteries and gas. Understanding the safety characteristics of these vehicles is essential to maintaining the high level of confidence in equipment and abilities. Hence, Stena strives to lead and support the maturing of this topic across the shipping industry from research to application.
